For nature lovers, Costa Rica is without a doubt one of the most attractive destinations in the world. It has everything you could possibly want: beaches, volcanoes, hot springs, jungles, rivers and yes, you guessed it, waterfalls! I personally love waterfalls, there’s something so powerful and exciting about them. Any hike that leads to a waterfall is just that much more appealing, don’t you think?
When I was backpacking through Costa Rica, I was blown away by how many waterfalls this country has — far more than I ever expected. It was pretty much impossible to see them all. If you’re planning a trip, you might feel the same way. That’s why I put together this guide to the 5 most breathtaking waterfalls in Costa Rica that you absolutely shouldn’t miss!

~ 5 breathtaking waterfalls in Costa Rica ~
1. LA FORTUNA WATERFALL
Visiting La Fortuna Waterfall was definitely one of the highlights of my trip through Costa Rica. The trail leading there is beautiful in itself, and once you arrive, the view is nothing short of breathtaking. The waterfall plunges 72 meters into a deep, dark blue pool — an unforgettable sight.
At the bottom, you can go for a swim in the cool water, which is so refreshing and exhilarating. Or if you aren’t feeling as adventurous, you can simply relax by the riverside and watch the colorful fish drift by in the crystal clear stream.

Location? La Fortuna, Alajuela, Northern Costa Rica
Entrance price? $20
How to get there? From La Fortuna town, I suggest you take a taxi or uber (it’s only an 8 min. drive, but a bit steep to walk). Alternatively, you can join a guided tour to reach the waterfall and even combine it with other fun acitivities nearby.
Where to stay nearby? Tucked away in the heart of the lush jungle, this stunning boutique hotel features a swimming pool, breathtaking volcano views, and is just a stone’s throw from the waterfall.
2. RIO CELESTE
Rio Celeste is a unique natural phenomenon that needs to be on your Costa Rica itinerary. Due to a specific chemical process the water turns a fluorescent turquoise blue colour that looks almost unnatural. Don’t forget to check the weather before you go, because when it rains the river gets muddy and it won’t give the same effect.

Location? Tenorio Volcano National Park, Alajuela/Guanacaste, Northern Costa Rica
Entrance price? $12
How to get there? Access to Rio Celeste involves a moderate hike within the national park. I definitely recommend joining a tour for this one, as the guide will know all of the best spots and provide some interesting facts while you’re at it.
Where to stay nearby? If you’re in the mood for a luxurious stay, Hideaway Rio Celeste Hotel is the perfect pick. Think beautifully designed interiors, a private hot tub and stunning views. It’s the ideal setting for a romantic getaway.
Prefer something more adventurous (and budget-friendly)? These cozy treehouses offer an immersive stay in nature, perfect for those looking to truly disconnect.

3. LLANOS DE CORTES
One of Guanacaste’s hidden treasures: Llanos De Cortes waterfall. The waterfall is gorgeous and wide and there’s a nice big pool to cool off in. This one is perfect for families with kids as there’s a sandy area where you can chill out and have a picnic while your little ones play in the shallow water.

Location? Bagaces, Guanacaste, Northwestern Costa Rica (30 min. from Liberia)
Entrance price? $7
How to get there? Llanos de Cortes waterfall is easily accessible by car or public transportation from Liberia. When you get to Bagaces, follow the signs to the waterfall entrance.
Where to stay nearby? Enjoy a luxurious yet adventurous stay with natural hot springs from these stylish riverside bungalows (honestly, take me there now).
4. CATARATA DEL TORO
Catarata Del Toro is an absolute must-see in Costa Rica. It’s an almost 90m long waterfall that’s hidden inside a volcano crater, covered with luscious green vegetation. The views are out of this world, like something from a movie (especially if you’ve lived in cities for most of your life).
If you like, you can hike all the way down and admire the waterfall from below. The path is well-maintained and although you have to do quite a lot of steps, it’s so worth it!

Location? Juan Castro Blanco National Park, Alajuela, Central Costa Rica
Entrance price? $14
How to get there? Catarata del Toro is located in Juan Castro Blanco National Park near the small town of Bajos del Toro. You can rent a car or join a tour (it’s not easily reached by public transport) from La Fortuna or San José.
Where to stay nearby? For the ultimate luxury yet secluded retreat experience, these elegant lodges & spa will give you plenty of opportunity to recharge and unwind.
A bit further from the waterfall, but offering the most magnificent views, you can also find this luxury tent with gorgeous garden and hot tub!
5. MONTEZUMA WATERFALLS
I explored Montezuma waterfalls several times while I was staying in Montezuma and it was one of my favourite activities. I mean, it’s the town’s top attraction for a reason. There’s one big waterfall and two smaller ones. A lot of people skip the smaller ones that are higher up, but I thought they were quite magical. The hike up there is also super adventurous and fun. It’s the perfect activity for couples or families.

Location? Montezuma, Puntarenas, Western Costa Rica
Entrance price? No fee for the main waterfall, $2 for the upper waterfalls
How to get there? The waterfalls are accessible via a scenic hike from Montezuma town. Follow signs or ask locals for directions.
Where to stay nearby? This quaint little hotel is located right in the town centre and within walking distance from the beach. It’s got a jungle vibe, a gorgeous pool and rooms with ocean view and hammocks.
