🌿 Nature & Wildlife Encounters

1. Visit a national park

Costa Rica is world-renowned for its incredible biodiversity and strong commitment to conservation. Nearly 25% of the country’s land is protected through national parks and reserves, making it a haven for nature lovers. While Manuel Antonio National Park is the most famous — known for its white-sand beaches, sloths, monkeys, and ease of access — it’s also one of the busiest.

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, consider Cahuita National Park on the Caribbean coast, where you can snorkel above coral reefs and hike through coastal rainforest. The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is another hidden gem, home to endangered manatees, sea turtles, and over 360 bird species. However, my personal favourite was Arenal Volcano National Park, with its iconic volcano, age-old majestic trees and colourful toucans.

2. Go on a guided night tour

Your best chance to spot a variety of animals is by joining a guided night tour. As the sun sets, the forest truly comes alive and somehow, your guide always knows exactly where to find even the tiniest creatures. You’ll not only see wildlife you’d likely miss on your own, but also learn a ton of fascinating facts along the way. It doesn’t get much more adventurous than walking through the jungle at night, surrounded by mysterious sounds and glowing eyes in the dark…

3. Watch turtles hatch

Whether you want to witness giant leatherback turtles nesting under the moonlight, or see tiny hatchlings make their way to the ocean, it’s all possible in Costa Rica. One of the best places to experience this is Playa Montezuma, where local conservation groups work to protect sea turtle nests and guide hatchlings safely to the sea. I’ll never forget watching these little baby turtles making their way into the ocean.

4. Visit the Jaguar Rescue Center

I can’t say enough good things about the Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo. It’s a rehabilitation center for injured or orphaned animals that are released back into the jungle as soon as they’re healthy and able to survive on their own. The guides are incredibly passionate and knowledgeable and on the tour, you’ll get to see howler monkeys, capuchins, various snake species, toucans, wildcats, and possibly the cutest thing I’ve every seen: baby sloths. The center also runs volunteer programs, making it a great option if you’re looking to give back during your travels.

5. Go whale watching in Uvita

If you’re visiting between July and October or December to April, Uvita is one of the best places in the world to spot humpback whales. Take a boat tour from Marino Ballena National Park (which harbours the famous whale-tail shaped beach) and witness these majestic creatures breaching the surface.

6. Spot wildlife everywhere

Did you know that Costa Rica is home to around 500 000 (!) different species? Needless to say, spotting wildlife is on most people’s bucket list when visiting. You don’t even have to go into the jungle to see wild animals; I’ve seen monkeys and iguanas chillin’ on the side of the road!

🏄‍♀️ Adventure & Outdoor Fun

7. Go ziplining through the jungle

Ziplining through the jungle is one of the most popular activities in Costa Rica. It’s an exhilarating way to experience the rainforest from above, soaring past treetops and spotting wildlife from a completely new perspective. It’s the perfect adrenaline rush for adventure lovers who don’t want to go too extreme, making it a great choice for both adults and kids alike. The best choice for ziplining is probably Monteverde, home to one of the longest canopy tours in Latin America, complete with hanging bridges and cloud forest views. Other options can be found in Arenal, Manuel Antonio and Guanacaste.

8. Take surfing lessons

Costa Rica is a surfer’s paradise, and it’s easy to see why. With warm water, consistent waves, and a wide variety of surf spots, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re just starting out or already a pro. Beginners will feel right at home at Playa Tamarindo, Playa Sámara, or Playa Cocles, where the waves are generally gentle and there are plenty of surf schools to help you get started.

9. Try canyoning or rafting

If you’re craving a thrill, Costa Rica’s wild rivers and lush canyons won’t disappoint. White-water rafting is especially popular on rivers like the Pacuare and Sarapiquí, where you’ll navigate rapids surrounded by rainforest and waterfalls. It’s as scenic as it is exciting. For a different kind of adventure, canyoning lets you rappel down waterfalls, jump into natural pools, and hike through rugged jungle terrain. It’s the ultimate way to connect with nature while getting your adrenaline fix.

10. Explore by bike

Biking isn’t ideal everywhere in Costa Rica — the hills can be steep and the road conditions rough — but in some coastal towns, it’s the main way to get around. On the Caribbean side, especially around Puerto Viejo, biking is not only practical but part of the laid-back lifestyle. I loved cruising along the palm-lined roads in my bikini, even in the occasional tropical downpour. There’s something magical and incredibly freeing about pedaling through the rain, barefoot and salty from the sea, with the jungle all around you.

11. Go snorkelling or scuba diving

Costa Rica may be known for its lush jungles, but the underwater world is just as captivating. With both Pacific and Caribbean coasts, the country offers plenty of incredible spots for snorkeling and scuba diving. You’ll find vibrant coral reefs, volcanic rock formations, sea turtles, rays, and even reef sharks. The Gulf of Papagayo, Caño Island, and Gandoca-Manzanillo are popular dive sites, while calmer waters like Playa Conchal or Isla Tortuga are perfect for snorkeling.

I went on a snorkeling boat tour to Isla Tortuga, and even though the weather that day was grey and rainy at times, it made the experience all the more rugged and adventurous.

🌋 Scenic Experiences

12. Watch the sunset

I’ve never seen so many breathtaking sunsets as I did during my stay in Costa Rica. Especially on the Pacific coast, it’s almost like a daily ritual; everyone heads to the beach with a drink in hand and just watches the sky perform its magic.

13. Swim in a bioluminescent bay

Yes, it’s real, and yes, it’s unreal. On the Nicoya Peninsula, you can take a nighttime kayak tour or boat trip to experience the glowing waters caused by bioluminescent plankton. Every paddle stroke lights up the ocean like stardust. For the best chance to see it, go during a new moon when the sky is darkest.

14. Take a tour to Isla Tortuga

Isla Tortuga is a small island just off the shore of Costa Rica that will give you all the tropical vibes. Think white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and epic snorkel spots. On my tour, we hiked up a steep hill and were rewarded with stunning panoramic ocean views (totally worth the climb). It also included a lunch of fresh fish and snorkelling activities.

15. Discover beaches

There’s no shortage of dreamy beaches in Costa Rica. From the rugged, jungle-lined shores of Cahuita to the golden sands of Santa Teresa, each beach has its own vibe. Whether you’re after surfing waves, spotting colourful fish while snorkelling, or just a quiet place to read your book under a palm tree, Costa Rica’s coastline has you covered.

16. Chase waterfalls

Visiting waterfalls is one of my favourite activities and there’s definitely no lack of those in Costa Rica. From swimming in natural pools to snapping epic photos or just soaking up the jungle vibes, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. La Fortuna Waterfall is probably the most famous, but don’t skip out on the lesser-known spots like Llanos de Cortez or Montezuma Waterfalls (a bit of a hike, but totally worth it). If you’re interested, I also have a guide to the 5 most epic waterfalls in Costa Rica.

17. See a volcano

Costa Rica has several volcanoes (some still active) and visiting one is a must. Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna is by far the most iconic, with its perfect cone shape and lush surroundings. There are loads of hikes and viewpoints in the area, plus the added bonus of nearby hot springs to unwind afterward. If you’re into something more offbeat, Rincón de la Vieja offers volcanic mud pools and steaming vents!

18. Explore Monteverde Cloud Forest

Monteverde feels like stepping into a real-life fairytale. This high-altitude cloud forest is famous for its hanging bridges, elusive wildlife, and a cool, misty atmosphere that’s refreshingly different from the beachy coast. Whether you’re ziplining through the treetops or wandering peaceful trails, this lush reserve offers a dreamy jungle escape you won’t easily forget.

🧘‍♀️ Slow Down & Unwind

19. Kayak on a jungle river

For those of you who prefer a little less craziness, kayaking on a jungle river is a great option. It’s still adventurous, but also calming and relaxed. Plus, there’s more opportunity to spot wildlife than when you’re diving head first from a waterfall.

20. Soak in hot springs

Possibly one of my favourite experiences in Costa Rica: soaking in a steamy hot spring in the midst of the jungle while watching the rain fall and hearing tropical birds nearby. Near Arenal, you’ll find dozens of hot springs, from luxury spas to natural rivers like the one near Tabacón (which I absolutely loved). Don’t forget to bring a towel and dry clothes for later!

21. Go horseback riding

Horseback riding is surprisingly popular in Costa Rica, and it’s such a fun way to explore the landscape. You can trot through jungle trails, climb hills with volcano views, or ride along the beach at sunset. Tours are available all over the country and are often tailored to different experience levels.

22. Do a coffee or chocolate tour

Coffee and cacao are both big in Costa Rica, and you can find guided tours where you’ll learn how these local staples are grown, processed, and turned into sweet deliciousness. You’ll get to try samples (yes please!), and support local farms at the same time. I recommend doing this in Monteverde or La Fortuna where many farms are open to visitors.

23. Treat yourself to a spa day or wellness retreat

Costa Rica has become a top destination for wellness, and for good reason. Whether it’s a full-on yoga retreat in the jungle or just a simple massage by the beach, this country knows how to help you unwind. Santa Teresa and Nosara are especially known for their relaxed, wellness-focused vibe.

24. Visit a local market

Don’t miss the chance to check out a local farmers market (feria). You’ll find fresh tropical fruit, local snacks, handmade crafts, and just get a better feel for daily life. It’s also a great way to support small businesses and grab some unique souvenirs.

25. Experience a cultural festival

To truly connect with Costa Rican culture, try to participate in one of the local fiestas. One of the biggest is Fiestas Palmares in January (think parades, rodeos, concerts, and lots of dancing). Or catch the Día de los Boyeros (Oxcart Drivers Day) in March, a beautiful celebration of Costa Rica’s farming heritage, complete with colorfully painted carts and traditional dress. If you’re looking for more of an international, free-spirited vibe, Envision Festival might be your thing. Right by the beach in Uvita, the festival blends music, art, yoga, sustainability, and spiritual growth into a week-long experience.

I hope this list helps you plan an unforgettable trip and inspires you to soak up everything this incredible country has to offer. If you’ve been to Costa Rica or have questions about planning your trip, feel free to drop a comment below. I’d love to hear from you! 🙂
